White is the most popular car color

Axalta Coating Systems has released its Global Study of the Most Popular Automotive Colors. The results of the 65th edition of the annual report show that in 2017, white is the number one consumer favorite globally at 39 percent, followed by black in second place at 16 percent.

Gray and silver share third place for the second year in a row at 11 percent. Starting from the top position of the color white, there is a trend towards shiny mother-of-pearl colors for vehicles in the luxury segment. White mother-of-pearl colors gained four percent in 2017. At 20 percent, gray is more popular in Europe than in any other part of the world.

“Automotive color trends change over time,” says Elke Dirks, Automotive OEM Color Designer at Axalta for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. “Recently, blue has been on the rise in various shades, from chromatic to bright metallic hues.”
