The mountain of used tires is growing and the market for used tire recycling is in a state of upheaval. The Alliance for Future Tires, or AZuR for short, has therefore been formed in Germany. The aim of the innovation forum is to fully recycle used tires and rubber while at the same time reducing the amount of used tires. To this end, the various players from business and science in the “waste tire industry” should be networked, and SMEs should develop new products and business models. The “Retreading” working group will commission an eco-balance study and establish a common platform. Retreading has great potential to keep tires in the economic cycle for significantly longer and, in comparison to new tire production, to significantly save raw material resources and reduce emissions. “Unfortunately, these advantages are not yet sufficiently known in politics and the public, and retreaded tires are burdened with many prejudices,” says technical director Michael Schwämmlein from the German federal tire trade association BRV.
