New EU tire label
On May 1st, Europe will be the first region in the world to introduce an ice grip label for tires. The tires are also provided with a snow grip symbol and a QR code.

New EU tire label
The new labels, which will apply across Europe, are designed to help buyers compare different tires and encourage them to make safer and more environmentally friendly tire choices. As part of the change, the new labels will be mandatory for all tires produced after April 2021 and will therefore gradually be visible in stores. All-season tires, summer tires and winter tires without studs sold within the EU received an EU tire label for the first time in 2012. Previously, the labeling requirement applied to passenger car, SUV and van tires, with the necessary information including information on rolling resistance, wet grip and external rolling noise.
Reliable on ice
The labels are now being adjusted so that future information also includes information about grip on ice and snow. The previously known scale will be expanded and a QR code will also be added to the labels. However, this does not apply to studded winter tires. “The ice grip symbol indicates that the tire actually performs reliably and safely in Nordic winter conditions,” says Matti Morri, technical customer service manager at Nokian Tires. Jarmo Sunnari, SRA manager at Nokian Tires, gives an outlook on further developments: "In the future, the tire labels will be further expanded as they will also provide information about abrasion, i.e. tire wear, and mileage, i.e. the lifespan of the tire on the road. The decision has already been made, but the validation of the test methods will continue for years."
