Artificial intelligence detects damage to the car

“FastTrackAI” is the name of a new product from Deutsche Automobil Treuhand (DAT), which is currently still in the test phase. Pilot projects with customers are currently underway and market readiness is expected at the end of 2022.

And that's what it's all about: As the letters AI in the product name reveal, artificial intelligence is involved. At DAT this is called DAT7XM. And it is supposed to analyze images of damaged vehicles and identify their damage. Fast Track AI then carries out an initial calculation of the scope of repairs based on the DAT vehicle database. All parts, repair logic and composite work are taken into account based on current and structured manufacturer data that is available across brands in the DAT system.

It is precisely from combining the most modern AI methods with the existing DAT expertise for repair calculations that the provider expects to gain a corresponding competitive advantage over start-ups that only have know-how in image recognition software.

When the product comes onto the market, it should be able to be integrated into the existing DAT system. Up to ten photos of a damaged vehicle can then be uploaded. The system then compares these with the images of undamaged vehicles, detects dents and scratches and then calculates the necessary repair effort. According to DAT, the image capture should only take about two minutes and the calculation should take about three minutes. Overall, the company expects the AI product to save time by around half an hour.

The development is moving towards a self-service world, processes will become faster, more efficient and more digital, it was said during a digital presentation of the new system. Telematics is also an issue at DAT, another input channel that needs to be integrated in the future.

The responsible DAT experts emphasize that FastTrackAI should be purely a tool, but that the human factor should by no means be completely eliminated. In the end, the decision still lies with the latter.
