Volkswagen and Bosch have gigantic plans
When it comes to electromobility, Volkswagen is moving quickly: A new declaration of intent between the car company and Bosch stipulates that they would like to jointly become suppliers of battery cell factories. The market for this - in Europe alone - appears to be gigantic.

Volkswagen and Bosch have gigantic plans
The partnership between Bosch and the Volkswagen Group could soon be significantly expanded. Both companies recently signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the creation of a European supplier to equip battery cell factories. Both companies plan to deliver integrated battery production systems and support battery cell and system manufacturers with on-site ramp-up and maintenance. The companies strive for cost and technology leadership in the industrialization of battery technology and the series production of sustainable, state-of-the-art batteries. In Europe alone, the Volkswagen Group plans to build six gigafactories by 2030.
The aim of the two companies is to supply the full range of processes and components required for large-scale production of battery cells and systems. The industry-wide demand seems enormous, as Volkswagen describes in a press release: “In Europe alone, various companies are planning battery cell factories with a total annual capacity of around 700 gigawatt hours by 2030.”
The partnership is based on complementary expertise: While Volkswagen, as a vehicle manufacturer, is on its way to becoming a major battery cell manufacturer, Bosch has the know-how in factory automation and system integration. Together we want to take the leading role in the e-mobility of tomorrow. Preparations for founding the company should be completed by the end of 2022.
