Porsche invests in high-performance battery cells

Next step in Porsche's electric offensive: A sum in the high double-digit millions will be invested in the new Cellforce Group GmbH. The sports car manufacturer would like to further expand its technological leadership role in electromobility. Porsche and its joint venture partner Customcells have announced their entry into the production of high-performance battery cells.

"The battery cell is the combustion chamber of the future. As a new Porsche subsidiary, the Cellforce Group will significantly advance the research, development, production and sales of high-performance cells," says Oliver Blume, CEO of Porsche AG. "With the joint venture, we are positioning ourselves at the forefront of the global competition for the most powerful battery cell and making it the link between the unmistakable Porsche driving experience and sustainability. This is how we are shaping the future of sports cars."

By 2025, the workforce is expected to grow from an initial 13 employees to up to 80 people.

"We founded Customcells with the aim of developing customer-specific battery cells for the most demanding applications, and that is exactly what we can now achieve together with Porsche. The planned production facility should achieve a capacity of at least 100 MWh per year. This corresponds to high-performance battery cells for 1,000 vehicles," says Torge Thönnessen, CEO Customcells. “In the partnership with Porsche, we not only bring our expertise in cell technology and production, but also agility, innovative strength and individual problem-solving skills,” emphasizes Leopold König, CEO Customcells.
