Pirelli on quiet paws

The Pirelli Noise Canceling System (PNCS) technology is designed to reduce the noise level inside the vehicle. This is caused by the tires rolling on the road surface. The PNCS reduces noise emissions by up to 25 percent. This is made possible by using a special sound-absorbing material in the tire. It absorbs vibrations in the air that would otherwise be transmitted into the vehicle interior and cause annoying background noise. The “sponge” is made of foam, the open cells of which maximize the working surface of the material, increasing vibration dampening and therefore reducing noise. The Pirelli tires can be recognized by a special marking on the sidewall. The abbreviation PNCS stands next to the symbol of a loudspeaker and the sound waves crossed out by a bar.

DEMAND IS RISING

According to Pirelli, the demand for PNCS has quickly doubled: by the end of 2017, Pirelli had 78 homologations. A year later, the number had increased by 100 percent and is now over 150 manufacturer releases. The system developed by Pirelli came onto the market in 2013 and has since been increasingly requested by car manufacturers for vehicles, particularly in the premium and prestige segments, in order to offer passengers more comfort.
