In mid-July, 238 participants started in Gröbming for Austria's largest classic car rally, the Ennstal Classic. The most beautiful traffic jams with well-restored metal treasures from the 1920s to 1970s arose in advance on the narrow town thoroughfares. The oldest vehicle was an open two-seater Ballot 3/8 LC from 1924, the youngest car was a Ferrari Dino from 1972, well known to older generations from the fun crime series “The Two” - Tony Curtis was behind the wheel at the time. On the two days before the race there was a crowd of millions of euros worth of metal at the assembly point on the outskirts of Gröbming. In the middle of it all was the white tent of the Graz measurement technology specialists from AVL Ditest, from which a symphony of high-revving engines and the smell of not-quite-burned gasoline emanated. “With our diagnostic devices we can assess the condition of the mixture preparation, the associated engine power delivery and the condition of the ignition system,” explains Hannes Bloder, diagnostic specialist at AVL Ditest. The driver of a beautiful and very rare Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato and his passenger are visibly relieved when the AVL technician signals with a raised thumb that the carburettor and ignition are perfectly adjusted.
“We use our MDS 650 measuring station with complete emissions testing and measurement technology including our Scope 1400 oscilloscope to analyze the ignition signals,” explains Bloder. AVL Ditest Area Sales Manager Otto Loacker also supported the diagnostic team at the Ennstal Classic. "We examined around 30 vehicles a day. If a defect emerged, we repaired it as best we could."
