Yes to the continuation of the e-mobility bonus
Austrian automobile importers view the planned continuation of the purchase promotion of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids positively from February 2022. “New registrations of electrified vehicles are constantly increasing and have also achieved significant market shares in 2021,” said Günther Kerle, spokesman for the Austrian automobile importers. "We are therefore pleased that, after long negotiations with the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection (BMK), we have managed to achieve a result that will help us to continue to put more clean vehicles on the road and to meet the vehicle manufacturers' ambitious fleet targets. In the coming years, a large number of electric models will come onto the market that are suitable for everyday use due to their range. Funding is crucial in this phase in order to drive forward the market breakthrough. The Austrian ones Automobile importers are once again ready to make their contribution and support the successful e-mobility promotion for cars – a joint campaign by the BMK and the Austrian automobile importers – in 2022.”
However, to finally break through on the market, a comprehensive package of measures is required, which includes tax incentives, purchase incentives and possibly also advantages in road traffic. "We have had the experience in Austria in recent years that consumers react very positively to tax concessions. This is particularly evident in the tax measures already in place for electric vehicles, especially in the commercial sector, such as exemption in kind and input tax deduction. These concessions have had an extremely positive effect; the proportion of electrified vehicles among new registrations has increased significantly," says Kerle. However, these measures would have to be accompanied by an increased expansion of the charging infrastructure, with a focus on urban areas.
The purchase promotion of cars is part of an electromobility package that has been launched jointly by the BMK or its predecessor ministries and the Austrian automobile importers since 2017. As part of this funding campaign, the purchase of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids is supported through half-half co-financing. As of October 31, 2021, almost 71,000 purely electric vehicles were registered in Austria.
