Goodbye brake fluid

“Making future mobility happen, today!” - This is the motto under which Continental will be presenting itself at the IAA Mobility in Munich from September 5th to 10th, 2023. Along the two theme worlds of “software-based” and “sustainable” mobility, the technology company will present novel high-performance computers and software solutions for the rapid and cost-efficient implementation of digital mobility. In addition, a sustainable vehicle interior of the future and a concept tire that enables particularly energy-efficient driving in city traffic. “Today, four out of five new cars worldwide are equipped with hardware and software solutions from Continental – safe, comfortable and sustainable,” says CEO Nikolai Setzer.

The brake not only contributes to driving safety in borderline situations, but must also make a contribution to vehicle efficiency. The aim of the developers is therefore to reduce CO2 emissions and reduce particle emissions from friction brakes. At the IAA Mobility, Continental is presenting the roadmap for future braking systems that increase safety and sustainability in equal measure. One example is a so-called semi-dry brake system: electromechanical brakes are used on the rear axle, which are operated “dry”, i.e. without brake fluid. Advantage for the car manufacturer: There is no need to fill and bleed the brake system during production. Millions of liters of old brake fluid are also avoided, which have to be disposed of properly after every change.
