Bosch is expanding its Linz location
The Bosch Engineering Center in Linz has previously specialized in the development of so-called common rail injectors for commercial vehicles and, as an international competence center in this area, has been setting the pace of innovation worldwide for years. Bosch is successfully asserting itself as the world market leader. In addition to the injection injectors mentioned, which are used in trucks, excavators or boats, injection valves are also being developed for large gas engines. “We also repeatedly succeed in locating further engineering projects with future potential in Linz and thus generating growth opportunities for the location,” explains DI (FH) Christian Ganser, head of the Bosch Engineering Center in Linz.
In 2020, a team was set up in Linz in the “Business Digital Organization” area of Bosch Powertrain Solutions to implement data analysis services for product development. Artificial intelligence is also used, which enables faster and more cost-effective development using generative algorithms and big data analysis. The site also started the first work on hydrogen tank valves. These mechatronic components enable the hydrogen tank to be filled with or removed from the medium.
Since summer 2021, a team of high-frequency experts in Linz has been working on the development of so-called “SoC” (Systems on Chip) for automotive radar systems. SoCs are highly integrated circuits, i.e. silicon chips only a few square millimeters in size in the most modern semiconductor technologies, which implement complex functions using millions of individual components and are used in many ways: in computers, in mobile devices, right through to environmental sensors and real-time control of actuators in modern vehicles.
“At the end of 2021, we also got involved in projects related to the hydrogen engine. We also want to establish the corresponding infrastructure at the site in 2022,” says Christian Ganser. “Due to the work we have done so far in various development projects and the optimal conditions in Upper Austria, we are successfully continuing to write our transformation story towards hydrogen, the energy source of the future, and other software and electronics projects.”
A total of around 230 employees work at the Bosch Engineering Center in Linz. "And we are developing an additional 35 technical talents. Anyone interested can submit their application on-line ", says Christian Ganser. We are looking for specialists in software development and quality assurance, data analysts, data scientists as well as specialists in the development of integrated circuits and in the field of embedded software. The additional specialists will be deployed in the new areas mentioned as well as in the future office of ITK Engineering GmbH, a subsidiary of the Bosch Group, which serves customers from the automotive, railway technology, building technology, aerospace, medical technology, motorsport and robotics sectors with tailor-made advice and development support for system solutions in the areas of software engineering, embedded systems, control technology, cyber security and signal processing.
What makes Bosch stand out as an employer in Linz? “On the one hand, there are the groundbreaking projects that we work on and with which innovations are successfully developed,” says Christian Ganser. “On the other hand, it is the people who shape a special corporate culture in the international Bosch group and always act together as “a Linz team” with a lot of passion and commitment in accordance with the slogan “Passion for Engineering”. At the same time, we support our employees with flexible working time models, home office and built-in free window days.” This promotes a balance between work and leisure time and increases employee satisfaction and creativity. And that is an important building block for the company's innovative strength.
International competence centers for the development of mobility solutions are located at the Bosch locations in Vienna, Linz and Hallein. Around a third of the 2,940 employees at Bosch in Austria work in the engineering sector. More than 142 million euros, or around 12 percent of sales, went into research and development at Bosch in Austria in 2020. In addition, the company made investments of 13 million euros in Austria in 2020. For example, investments were made in laboratory facilities and testing technology at the development locations in Vienna and Linz.
