Innovative color measurement with Axalta

Axalta, a producer of liquid and powder coatings, is launching a new color measuring device for refinish customers. The new technology precisely measures the paint color of a vehicle and offers high color accuracy for water-based and solvent-based basecoat technologies. Axalta Irus Scan is the first step in Axalta Irus' three-step digital color management process: Scan - Find - Mix.

Axalta Irus Scan uses a patented angle to detect effect pigments. In this way, more precise measurements are achieved for popular achromatic effect colors. In addition, it is the first color measuring device with integrated gloss measurement capabilities. They ensure precise surface preparation and the correct application of clear coat products. The high-resolution RGB camera measures color effects and is connected to Axalta's color management system, which uses a proprietary algorithm. The newly updated database with more than two million color formulas provides the best possible color match for the vehicle being repaired. The time required to find the color is reduced and the throughput of vehicles is correspondingly increased and made faster and more efficient.

Axalta Irus Scan features a user-friendly interface and a live view display for the RGB camera. It does not need to be operated by a trained refinisher, which leads to optimization of work processes and increased productivity in the spray booth. Axalta Irus Scan provides precise measurement results in terms of color tone, gloss and effects. This increases efficiency and reduces the need for rework due to errors in color matching. This in turn leads to a reduction in material consumption and greater sustainability, the manufacturer promises.
