Fresh color treatment for classic cars

A Porsche 911 chassis in fresh grass green, the fuselage of a Jaguar E-Type in subtle yolk yellow and a Fiat 1100 that is currently being prepared for painting - it's a busy time in the Kubicek Autolackier GmbH workshops. The paint shop, founded in 1962 by Josef and Rudolf Kubicek on the outskirts of Pfaffstätten in Lower Austria, is now run by Johannes Spenger as operations manager. As a senior consultant, Rudolf Kubicek brings in the know-how he has acquired over decades, including his legendary instinct for the perfect color for each vehicle. “We of course use the most modern tools to find the color, but sometimes a trained eye is also needed,” smiles Kubicek. Johannes Spenger proudly demonstrates the computer-controlled “Daisy Wheel” color mixing system from Fillon, which is equipped with Glasurit colors and can be programmed with an accuracy of a hundredth of a gram. On the wall next to it hangs a colorful palette of countless color piping, which, like the portable digital color measuring device “Glasurit Ratio Scan II”, is used to find the color tone. “Each method has its advantages, and the combination of both works best,” says Johannes Spenger.

Repair and restoration

“We make the majority of our sales through accidents,” explains Spenger. Car dealerships first take their bodywork damage to the neighboring body shop Robert Hauke GmbH. After they have been welded and prepared there, they are rolled across the yard to the Kubicek paint shop. “As a pure paint shop, we are truly unique in Austria,” says Rudolf Kubicek. A total of ten employees carry out ongoing repairs and partial painting, as well as around four to five special paint jobs on classic cars from all eras every year. “Once we even had a beautiful Lagonda from the 1930s to paint,” says the senior. BASF sales consultant Thomas Dani counts the Pfaffstättner paint shop as one of his favorite customers: “You can just tell that people paint here with passion.” (be)
