Mewa takes AI on board

The Romanian company Esenca specializes in the development of AI-supported scanning processes for app-controlled determination of clothing sizes. Textile service provider Mewa is now expanding its portfolio in the area of digital customer service with a majority stake in Esenca. The AI-based technology enables Mewa itself, as well as its customers and partners, to use a convenient app-controlled body measurement process for optimal size recommendations when selecting work, occupational and safety clothing as well as occupational safety items. Manual measurements and size measurements on site could thus be made more flexible and efficient in the near future. “Our goal is to make customer-centered processes and service procedures even easier and more user-friendly for those who wear Mewa clothing using the possibilities of artificial intelligence,” explains Mewa CEO Bernhard Niklewitz. "In Esenca we have found a partner who has outstanding expertise in both the areas of AI and the textile industry. That is what motivated us to invest."

The digital process can be carried out using a smartphone or an offline device. Information about body size and gender as well as two full-body photos using a cell phone camera are required - each from the front and the side. Using the images, the precise body measurements are calculated with the support of artificial intelligence and transferred to the size grids of the Mewa collections. The photos do not have to be saved, but are only used to identify the measuring points. The standardized measurement with more than 100 measuring points is accurate to 0.5 centimeters. Within 30 seconds, users receive a size recommendation that fits the respective collection. Philipp Lehmkuhl, Managing Director of Esenca: "The correct fit is an important factor in work and protective clothing - for comfort and for overall safety. We are working on ensuring that the body measurement required for this is a matter of just a few seconds."
