Two-wheeler boom at the start of the season

In the first quarter of this year there were 12 percent more two-wheeler advertisements on the online portal willhaben.at compared to the same period last year. In the past few weeks, hundreds of thousands of two-wheelers have been taken out of home garages and started the season. The inventory survey by Statistics Austria for the calendar year 2022 showed more than 600,000 motorcycles and around 300,000 small motorcycles. Naturally, both new two-wheeler registrations and requests for two-wheelers reach their annual peak in the months of April and May.

Across the entire “Motorcycle & Quad” willhaben category, the KTM brand has received the most inquiries since the beginning of 2023, ahead of Yamaha, Honda, Puch and Derbi. KTM scores particularly well in the motocross sector. In the “Mopeds/Mofa” sub-segment, vehicles from the manufacturers Puch, Derbi, Rieju, Aprilia and Vespa attracted the majority of buyer interest this year. In 2023, the Vespa will be most popular with local two-wheeler enthusiasts in the “Scooter/Scooter” category. Behind them are Piaggio, Honda, Yamaha and Kymco. The most sought-after “choppers/cruisers” in 2023 are the models from the manufacturers Harley-Davidson, Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki and Suzuki.

In total, more than 60,000 advertisements went online in the “Motorcycle & Quad” wanted section in the first quarter of 2023. Compared to Q1 last year, this corresponds to a whopping increase in supply of more than 12 percent. There are currently more than 35,000 motorcycles, mopeds, scooters and quads waiting for new owners or a shared ride. An average, used moped (up to 50cc or a maximum of 6 hp and no older than five years) has so far been offered on willhaben for an average of just under 2,000 euros in 2023. A classic Piaggio (up to and including 125cm3 or 15 HP and also no older than five years old) was priced between 2,400 and 2,600 euros this year. For a comparable Vespa, the sellers' asking price was around 3,800 to 4,100 euros. Popular motorcycles such as Hondas from the CB/CBF/CBR series - a maximum of 5 years old - are in the willhaben hit list for an average of 6,500 euros. Motocross fans have to budget around 5,000 euros for a KTM that is no older than 5 years. A well-maintained Harley-Davidson, also a maximum of 5 years old, can currently be purchased for an average of around 25,000 euros.

In absolute numbers, electric two-wheelers still have exotic status: there are currently around 1,500 examples equipped with batteries. Entry-level models start at around 400 to 500 euros, an E-Vespa costs around 4,000 euros, and a BMW CE 04 starts at 12,000 euros. For a Harley LiveWire, the budget currently has to be around 25,000 euros.
