Desired car: Spacious combustion engine

The future undoubtedly belongs to electric cars, but combustion engines are still very popular in Austria. When asked about the preferred type of drive when buying a car, gasoline (29 percent) and diesel (27 percent) are still leading and almost as popular as in 2020 (gasoline 30 percent, diesel 24 percent). Hybrid vehicles are in third place (20 percent), and electric drives are in fourth place (14 percent). This has even become less attractive compared to 2020 (16 percent).

Size also plays a role in the purchasing decision. Although the small car is the vehicle that would be most attractive if buying a car now for 28 percent of those surveyed, overall large models top the wish list. Around a quarter of those surveyed lean towards an SUV (24 percent) or a station wagon (23 percent). 13 percent would be happiest with a van. The size of the car you want also has to do with gender. Women are more likely than average to be satisfied with a small car (38 percent), men with a station wagon (31 percent).

The medium size class is not particularly high on the wish list. Limousines would be the dream car for just 5 percent of Austrians, and coupés for only 3 percent. And the long, modern convertible would only be the vehicle of choice for 2 percent. For the trend study, Integral market and opinion research for AutoScout24 surveyed a total of 500 Austrian car owners between the ages of 18 and 69. The number is representative of this target group.
