Wellness SUV from Volkswagen

The Tayron is Volkswagen's second largest SUV in Europe and is also built in Wolfsburg. With up to seven seats and a generous cargo space, it is intended to appeal to families; with its large trailer load of up to 2.5 tons, it is also suitable for towing sports boats or horse trailers. The technical basis is provided by the latest evolutionary stage of the modular transverse matrix (MQB evo). In addition, technology systems that were first created for the Touareg were adapted. Examples of this technology transfer on board the Tayron include interactive “IQ.LIGHT – HD matrix headlights” and seats with a pneumatic 10-chamber pressure point massage. At the presentation, Richard Gollatsch, car trainer at Volkswagen, pointed out the Tayron's low drag coefficient of 0.28, as well as the plug-in hybrid drive with an electric range of over 100 km, which is one of the most economical systems of this type in the world.

The Tayron will be launched in two equipment lines: “Life”2 and “R-Line”1. The Tayron Life already comes with 3-zone automatic climate control, 10-color ambient lighting, nine airbags, a driving experience switch (control of the driving profiles including all-wheel profiles in 4MOTION, audio volume and activation of "Atmospheres" as pre-programmed lighting and audio moods), sun blinds in the rear doors, infotainment system with unlockable navigation function and App-Connect Wireless (for Apple CarPlay and Android Car), digital instruments, LED headlights including automatic high beam switching (“Light Assist”), illuminated VW symbols in the front and rear as well as 17-inch light alloy wheels. The standard assistance systems include the ACC automatic distance control, the turning braking function, a lane change assistant (“Side Assist”), a lane keeping assistant (“Lane Assist”), an emergency braking system including pedestrian and cyclist detection (“Front Assist”), a parking assistant (“Park Assist Plus”), the reversing camera (“Rear View”) and traffic sign recognition. Also standard: the new exit warning system. As an extension of the lane change assistant, it can, within the system limits, prevent one of the doors from being opened if a vehicle approaches from behind. The system warns acoustically and visually. The dynamic Tayron R-Line is characterized by details such as sport comfort seats in “ArtVelours Eco” with integrated headrests, large “ArtVelours Eco” in the dashboard and doors, aluminum-look decors, individual bumpers in R-Line design and 19-inch aluminum rims. The “R-Line” is also equipped with “LED Plus headlights” (including dynamic cornering lights), seat heating, heated sports steering wheel, programmable 3D LED taillights and 30-color ambient lighting including illuminated interior applications in the dashboard and door panels.

Volkswagen will offer the new Tayron with two plug-in hybrid drives (eHybrid), a mild hybrid drive (eTSI), a turbo gasoline (TSI) and two turbo diesel engines (TDI). The power range ranges between 110 kW (150 HP) and 200 kW (272 HP). The pure turbo petrol engine and the most powerful turbo diesel are coupled to the 4MOTION all-wheel drive; all other versions have front-wheel drive. In all Tayron versions, the switching work is carried out by an automatic dual clutch transmission (DSG). The two plug-in hybrid models represent a particularly innovative drive solution, as they enable large electric ranges in everyday life and thus temporarily turn the Tayron into an electric car. At the same time, both Tayron eHybrids score highly on long journeys with long total ranges of around 850 km and low consumption values. In the basic version, the combination of a four-cylinder turbo engine plus electric motor develops a system output of 150 kW (204 hp); in the top version it is 200 kW (272 hp). Thanks to the 19.7 kWh (net) battery, Volkswagen is forecasting an electric range of over 100 km for the Tayron eHybrid models. The battery is charged at the AC wallbox and at AC charging stations with up to 11 kW, and at DC fast charging stations with up to 50 kW2.
