Motor vehicle statistics: restrained cheers
After the absolute catastrophe year of 2022, the downward trend was stopped, but we are still far from a “normal year” with up to 350,000 units in the pre-Corona years, according to Günther Kerle, spokesman for the Austrian automobile importers. In 2023, Statistics Austria recorded almost 240,000 new passenger car registrations, around 11 percent more than in the 2022 financial year. Kerle emphasized that this does not mean that the trend has been reversed.
Last year, the supply chains and thus production were stabilized again. This led to the reduction of orders from 2022 and a normalization of delivery times. “But the year 2023 was also characterized by an extreme wave of price increases in all areas, and the high energy prices in particular led to further uncertainty among the population,” said Kerle. The result is a noticeable reluctance to buy both in the private sector and in corporate business. Kerle continues: “This would perhaps make some political actors happy, but it would not be positive news for the desired CO2 reduction in road traffic, as it would lead to further aging of the vehicle fleet and thus a slowdown in CO2 reduction.” In any case, the future of cars is electric, at least in Europe, and uncertainty is still very high, especially in the private customer sector. The expansion of the charging infrastructure must be further accelerated and the charging tariffs must become transparent and simple.
In any case, Kerle spoke out against further burdens and called for a reform of the commuter allowance, no further increase in the mineral oil tax and a valorization of the mileage allowance and the luxury tangent. In any case, individual motorized mobility must remain affordable for all citizens. The overall situation will remain challenging for 2024; the first half of the year will be dominated by the orderly reduction in order backlogs, while the second half of the year will be characterized in particular by new products and measures to stimulate sales. Due to the difficult general conditions, we are expecting a similar financial year to 2023, Kerle concluded.
