BYD is bucking the trend

Even if the figures from Statistics Austria show a slight decrease in demand for e-cars in Austria compared to the previous year, e-mobility is still on the rise across Europe. In this country, BYD in particular is rapidly gaining volume, as Danijel Dzihic, Managing Director BYD Austria, emphasizes: "We are growing quickly but sustainably and are continuing our dream start from the previous year. We are currently more than 400 percent above the previous year in terms of new registrations and are therefore realistically heading towards over 3,000 new registrations for the whole year."

According to Dzihic, the fact that BYD has now taken a regular place in the top 3 of the most popular brands among purely electric registrations and has overtaken the American market leader Tesla for the first time in July is, according to Dzihic, a “wonderful confirmation of our brand promise of affordable e-mobility at the price of a combustion engine and our work close to customers and dealers”. And it shows that “even as a newcomer, you can achieve great things in a short time with the right product quality and a relaxed team of motivated dealers.” Between January 1st and July 31st, 2024, BYD already accounts for 2,090 new electric registrations in Austria, which means that at the end of July more than twice as many vehicles were registered as in the whole of 2023. This corresponds to a market share of 1.4 percent of the overall market or 8.3 percent among purely electric registrations.

With currently six electric cars and one electric light commercial vehicle, the company is currently well positioned, and the portfolio will be expanded to include several models this year. In addition to the new fully electric model “Tang” with a 108.8 kWh battery, the brand’s first plug-in hybrid will also be coming onto the market in Austria in late autumn. The “Seal U DMi” is available with all-wheel drive, among other options, and offers a total WLTP range of over 1,000 kilometers. Dzihic: “We see great potential in Austria, especially with the all-wheel drive top model. BYD’s plug-in hybrid drive is extremely efficient and is a perfect bridging technology for many who cannot or do not want to switch completely to an electric car.”
