ARBÖ awards the Grand Automobile Prize
The election for the Great Austrian Automobile Prize from the ARBÖ club journal Freiefahrt has been won. The three winning vehicles were honored by ARBÖ President Peter Rezar and ARBÖ General Secretary Gerald Kumnig during a photo session. A total of 32 vehicles were chosen this year in three categories (Start, Medium, Premium). As in the previous year, only two vehicles took part in the start category. This shows that vehicle manufacturers are increasingly leaving the small car segment and no longer offer vehicles in the lower price segment. The nominees in the “Start” category this year came from Mitsubishi: The ASX impressed the 100-member jury more than the Colt and emerged as the “winner of the Great Austrian Automobile Prize 2023”.
The “Medium” category promised excitement this year: after all, two new brands, Fisker and BYD, were in the running for the first time this year and received positive expert and customer feedback shortly after their market launch. But the victory came from Stellantis: The Peugeot 408 prevailed in a close race ahead of the Jeep Avenger, meaning that Stellantis was able to achieve a double victory in this category. In third place was the Toyota Prius, whose previous generations were often found in the winners' lists of the Grand Austrian Automobile Prize.
14 representatives competed for victory in the Premium category. Ultimately, the jury chose the Mercedes-Benz E-Class for first place. Last year, the Germans took the top spot in this category with the GLC. Behind them, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and the BMW 5 Series came in second and third place. This means that the classic sedan with a combustion engine or partially electrified drive is experiencing a revival after the category was dominated by SUVs and electric avant-gardists in recent years. “This year, our award once again showed the variety of models and drives currently offered by manufacturers and demanded by customers,” said Gerald Kumnig happily at the trophy presentation in the Augarten in Vienna.
