New tires made from PET bottles
Since the beginning of June, Continental has been supplying the Austrian PIA companies with more sustainable passenger car tires, in which the traditionally used polyester in the tire casing is partially replaced by recycled polyester yarn.
The material is processed using the innovative ContiRe.Tex technology and is initially used in selected dimensions of Continental summer and all-season tires. The recycled polyester yarn is obtained from used PET plastic bottles without any intermediate chemical steps and remains dimensionally stable even under high loads and temperatures. One set of tires contains around 40 recycled PET bottles, which come exclusively from regions without a closed recycling cycle.
Three different tire models in five dimensions each with ContiRe.Tex technology can now be ordered from all Austrian PIA companies. In addition, the car dealerships PIA Wien Hietzing and PIA Graz-Liebenau are pilot companies with targeted marketing activities to increase awareness of the more sustainable tire variant.
