want: The car trends for 2022

Michael Gawanda, Head of Auto & Motor at willhaben, looked at the most important trends and developments that will affect the industry in 2022. His forecast: The prospects for 2022 look somewhat more positive compared to the previous year, but it won't be easy for retailers. The strong increase in online sales will continue this year, as more and more manufacturers want to exploit the potential of the digital sales channel even more. In order to give customers the most convenient access to their dream car, the services offered by providers are usually varied. Numerous manufacturers are already offering virtual tours, location-independent test drives and delivery of vehicles directly to your doorstep. As a result of direct sales by manufacturers, established dealers suffer and will continue to face the challenge of defending their position in the sales process in 2022.

Used cars are in high demand

Due to the current chip shortage and the resulting shortage of new cars, the growing need for individual mobility cannot be met. “A look at the manufacturers’ current delivery times shows that customers have to wait between six and 18 months on average for a new car they order,” says Gawanda. As an alternative, people often look for a young or used car that is quickly available. Conclusion: Supply is shrinking, prices are rising. Demand is particularly high for vehicles that are four years old or younger, reports Gawanda. “These vehicles are usually subject to modern technical standards, but are nowhere near as expensive as a new car.” Electric and hybrid cars are now also popularly purchased second-hand.

Technology race

In 2022, automobile manufacturers will continue to be increasingly dependent on the integration of digital technology when building their vehicles. Given the rapid pace at which new technological advances are being introduced into cars, many manufacturers will need to either invest heavily in their technology departments in 2022 or forge solid partnerships with technology companies. The most important purchasing arguments for electric vehicles include range and charging speed. After little has happened in this area for a long time, new dynamics are now coming into the industry. Conclusion: Only through innovations and partnerships will it be possible to keep up with technical progress and assert ourselves on the market in the long term.

Entertainment and security

According to Michael Gawanda,  we will also see a sharp increase in in-car entertainment in 2022. Users can look forward to features such as surround sound, high-resolution screens and interactive media experiences. New multiplayer entertainment, augmented reality window displays and custom music systems are also in development. The digital systems are not only intended to serve as entertainment, but at the same time to increase road safety and relieve and support the driver.
