Used cars: prices continue to rise

The prices for used cars reached a new high in September this year, shows the AutoScout24 used car price index. A used car cost an average of 27,849 euros in September - this corresponds to a further increase of 1.4 percent or 377 euros. Compared to September 2021, prices have increased by 16 percent or 3,846 euros. Older vehicles and sports cars in particular became more expensive last month. While the overall offer tended to decline, the offer of used electric cars on AutoScout24 increased in September.

A look at the vehicle segments shows that inflation in September was primarily driven by older used vehicles. Vehicles between 5 and 10 years increased by 1.9 percent to an average of 21,981 euros. 10 to 20 year old models cost 5 percent more than in the previous month (average price: 11,001 euros). With 8 percent more demand, cars in this age group were also the category with the strongest increase in demand. For classic cars, sellers recorded an increase in value of 2.8 percent (8,502 euros). Among the vehicle classes, prices rose, especially for sports cars, to an average of 63,564 euros, or 3.7 percent. The second largest increase was in vans and minibuses: the average price of 24,928 euros was at least 1.6 percent higher than the previous month.

Not all types of drive increased in price in September. Hybrids with an average price of 45,956 euros were even offered 1.5 percent cheaper than in August. However, used diesel engines have risen in price: those interested paid an average of 26,762 euros, 1.5 percent more than in the previous month. Electric cars remained relatively stable in price in September and cost an average of 52,663 euros. The price increase for classic gasoline engines was 1 percent, but with an average price of 26,746 euros, they are in the middle price range. It's even cheaper to drive LPG cars, which saw a significant price drop (-7 percent) in September at an average of 17,842 euros. The cheapest, however, were natural gas vehicles (CNG), which, with an average price of 16,718 euros, were also 7 percent cheaper compared to the previous month.

In September, providers listed 8.5 percent more electric cars on AutoScout24. However, if you look at the other types of drive, the range on offer is declining. In September, around 20 percent fewer LPG vehicles were offered, 5.5 percent fewer CNG models, 3.6 percent fewer gasoline engines, 2.7 percent fewer diesel engines and the range of hybrids also fell by 1.5 percent. The latter in particular were in high demand in September with an increase of 8 percent. Demand for CNG models fell by 19 percent compared to August. While demand for diesel and gasoline engines increased by 2 percent each.
