E-cars on the rise in the GW market
Auto1.com, Europe's largest trading platform for used cars, conducted an online survey on the topic of electric vehicles among 16,700 participating partners and analyzed studies and its own data on this topic.
Compared to the previous year, Auto1 recorded an increase of over 100 percent in B2B trade with battery-electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hybrid vehicles (HEV) in 2021 and was able to sell more than 11,500 units. The increasing numbers show that electric vehicles have arrived on the used car market.
Auto1 actively buys and markets vehicles in over 30 countries in Europe. Registered partners can benefit from cross-border trade, local price differences and the wide selection of European vehicle inventory. This means that BEVs, HEVs and PHEVs are not limited to local retail, as supply and demand differ drastically in different countries.
This is also reflected in European trading of BEVs, HEVs and PHEVs via Auto1.com: in 2021, almost 80 percent of electric vehicles were traded across borders, which is mainly due to differences in supply, demand and price levels in different markets. Last year, the highest demand for electric and hybrid vehicles was recorded in Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands.
In January 2022, Auto1 conducted an online survey among more than 16,700 participating partners about the used electric vehicles traded in 2021 and their expectations for 2022. The results show that 34 percent of participants sold at least one used electric vehicle in 2021 and 43 percent expect to also sell at least one used electric vehicle in 2022.
In 2021, more authorized dealers sold EVs than independent dealers, with 70 percent of authorized dealers and 31 percent of independent dealers selling at least one used EV. Around a third of authorized dealers sold at least 20 used electric vehicles in the same year, while only six percent of independent dealers sold that many units.
