DAT: Movement in the GW market

In its “Topic of the Month for July”, Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH (DAT) deals with the places of purchase in the used car business. A used car can be purchased from brand dealers, independent dealers or on the private market.

Market shares in the used car business on the move: While the market shares of the individual sales locations changed relatively little in recent years, there was movement in the market in 2021. A significant decline (-8 percentage points compared to the previous year) to 40 percent was observed in brand trade.

This was because the companies were partially sold out in 2021 and were hardly able to get supplies of young used cars (former company cars, vehicles from car rental companies or dealers' demonstration cars). This led to interested parties migrating to free trade and covering their mobility needs there (market share 27 percent, +6 percentage points compared to the previous year). The private market was able to almost maintain its share of 33 percent.

Exciting: Young used car buyers drove long distances.

Regardless of the place of purchase, brand or independent retailer, it is noticeable that the young buyer group up to the age of 22 made significantly longer journeys compared to the average used car buyer. While a good two percent of all buyers traveled more than 100 kilometers, the figure was five percent of the young target group. Three percent even traveled more than 200 kilometers to a private or commercial provider to purchase their dream used car.
