Car buyers currently have to spend an average of 25,569 euros for a used car in Austria. That is 1.25 percent or around 300 euros more than in April, as shown by the current AutoScout24 used car price index (AGPI). Compared to May 2021, car buyers in Austria currently have to pay an average of 17.5 percent more for used cars.
“After constant price increases, prices had leveled off somewhat in March and April, but in May prices not only rose again, they even reached a new all-time high,” says Alexander Vysek, Head of Sales at AutoScout24 in Austria.
The prices for used cars rose the most within the SUV and off-road vehicle segments at 2.1 percent; the average price here is currently 33,097 euros. Vans and minibuses were offered for an average of 22,524 euros in May and rose by 1.3 percent. The upper class increased by up to 1.4 percent and the price settled at 60,115 euros. Upper middle class cars currently cost 29,772 euros, the middle class costs 24,705 euros and the compact class is offered at 19,552 euros. The average small car is currently 14,534 euros, making it the only vehicle segment alongside sports cars to record a slight price decline of around 1 percent. Demand for sports cars increased by 4 percent and was priced at an average of 61,235 euros, a decrease of 3.3 percent compared to April.
When looking at the price development in the age segments, there are also signs of price increases, especially for used cars up to 5 years old, which have become up to 3 percent more expensive. For cars between 5 and 10 years old, consumers only had to dig slightly deeper into their pockets in May: prices in this middle age category rose by 1.2 percent to 20,535 euros. Cars between 10 and 20 years old (9,959 euros) also became 1.3 percent more expensive. Classic cars (27,339 euros) recorded slight price declines, down 1.3 percent, and youngtimers (8,461 euros), down 1.2 percent
Meanwhile, the used car platform mobile.de presented market data for Germany almost at the same time. According to their Autobarometer, the average price for used cars in Germany climbed to 32,000 euros for the first time. This corresponds to a price increase of 26.7 percent compared to the same month last year.
While small cars were offered at an average price of 17,493 euros at an almost identical level to the previous month of April, the price for upper-class vehicles rose in May from 75,932 euros to 76,720 euros (plus 1 percent). Only in the sports car segment did mobile.de, Germany's largest vehicle market, record a price decline to an average of 80,161 euros (minus 1.7 percent).
In May, vans, off-road vehicles and SUVs were increasingly offered again. The number of advertisements for the off-road giants rose by 2.8 percent, and for vans by as much as 7 percent. “Delivery bottlenecks and declines in production also affect the used car market, which is why the overall supply has fallen in recent months,” says Martin Fräder, Head of Sales at mobile.de. “The growth in supply in individual segments, such as vans and SUVs, is a positive sign for the market.”
With an average of 77.4 days, used cars waited longer for a new owner in May (plus 6.7 percent compared to the previous month), but compared to the same month last year, the number of idle days fell significantly (minus 21.4 percent). Minis recorded the largest decline compared to the same month last year at 67.4 days (minus 30.6 percent). Off-road vehicles (plus 7.4 percent) and upper mid-range vehicles (plus 8.2 percent) were at dealers for an above-average amount of time last month.
