The car dealership is and remains the best insurance”

With its insurance solutions and services, Garanta has been an indispensable part of the Austrian motor vehicle industry for 30 years. THE industry insurer represents the philosophy: The car dealership is the best insurance. In other words: The employees are the end customers’ first point of contact in the event of a claim. With Kurt Molterer, chief representative of Garanta Versicherungs-AG Austria, we will examine the question of what role the vehicle dealer will play in terms of mobility for the customer from now on.

Motor vehicle industry: How can Garanta, as the industry insurer, help customers come to the car dealership? How can customer loyalty to the car dealership be promoted?
Kurt Molterer:
A car dealership that lives by the Garanta philosophy “the car dealership is the best insurance” will automatically strengthen customer loyalty and increase customer frequency. This means that the car salesman is the customer's expert and first point of contact when it comes to mobility. Garanta offers its customers a so-called maintenance discount on the liability premium. The customer receives this discount if he carries out maintenance, service or a vehicle inspection at his dealer at least once a year.

What will the future look like? Both in terms of the role of car dealerships and motor vehicle companies as well as the function of Garanta as the industry insurer.
Of course there will be changes in the automotive industry. Be it through new types of drive, through changed consumer behavior or due to the general wave of digitalization. What will remain the same in the future is the customer's desire to have a contact person when it comes to solving their mobility needs. And the expert in the car dealership should continue to take on this function in the future. As an industry insurer, we will continue to do our part to support the car dealership in this task - true to the motto “The car dealership is the best insurance”.

Strict climate requirements are forcing the transport sector to take action. What can you as an insurer do to make your contribution to achieving climate goals?
As THE insurer of the Austrian motor vehicle industry, we have been dealing with the topic of ecology for many years and how we can create incentives so that policyholders are rewarded for their ecology awareness. Here are two examples. Firstly, the Garanta ecology bonus: owners of vehicles with alternative drive systems receive a 10% discount on the annual premium for motor vehicle liability and comprehensive insurance. Secondly, the ecology initiative: When a vehicle that is at least ten years old and is being scrapped is exchanged for a new car, customers can benefit from the comprehensive environmental bonus and receive comprehensive insurance for up to 12 months free of charge.

Those who cannot or do not want to afford their own car - primarily young people - are increasingly using car sharing and thus cars, motorcycles and bicycles. What role do retailers play in this?
Is this an opportunity for retailers to position themselves as contacts for all of these topics? For us, the car dealer is an expert and first point of contact when it comes to mobility. We have designed our insurance solutions and our processes in such a way that car dealership customers and policyholders visit their car dealership again and again. This begins with advice and selection of the right tariff and continues through to reporting the damage and processing the claim at the car dealership.

Driver assistance and automated driving could make motorized individual mobility possible for an even larger group of people in the future. Keyword: the aging society. What do high-quality insurance solutions have to be able to achieve in this context?
Insurance products have always been based on demographic circumstances or statistical probabilities and loss frequencies. These criteria were actuarially taken into account in the tariff design.
