Diagnostic crime thriller: The false suspicion

The Mercedes SLK 200 Cabrio is 13 years old, is powered by a 184 hp 1.8 liter petrol engine with an automatic transmission and already has 142,000 kilometers on the clock. One day the engine starts with a lot of smoke and a lot of jerking, doesn't accelerate for a few seconds, but then runs perfectly as if nothing had happened. The young owner had recently picked up the convertible from an independent workshop where she had taken it for service. Since several parts were replaced and the customer suspects sloppy work and consequential damage, she looks for a new workshop online and comes to diagnostic specialist Yücel Sarp, who runs a vehicle workshop for all brands together with his brother Yüksel in Vienna-Ottakring. She got the information from the previous workshop that the high-pressure pump was probably defective and should also be replaced. Sarp takes on the matter and becomes involved in a diagnostic crime story from which he ultimately learns a lesson for life.

• Die Kundin besteht trotzdem auf dem Austausch der Einspritzpumpe, den Kfz Meister Sarp schließlich auch durchführt.
• Bei einem Routinecheck der anderen Motorkomponenten stellt er fest, dass die Zündkerzen noch nie getauscht worden sind und sich nur sehr schwer herausdrehen lassen.
• Die Zündkerzen werden erneuert, das Kraftstoffsystem entlüftet. Ergebnis: Der Motor startet und läuft dank der neuen Zündkerzen ruhiger als zuvor, das Cabrio wird der Kundin als repariert und erprobt übergeben.
• Bereits am nächsten Tag meldet sich die Kundin bei der Werkstatt – das Ruckeln und Rauchen beim Kaltstart am Morgen sei schon wieder aufgetreten. Außerdem habe sie bemerkt, dass das Instrument der Kühltemperatur noch immer 80 Grad anzeigt, obwohl das Auto zuvor 12 Stunden gestanden ist.
• Die Vermutung der Kundin, dass vielleicht das Steuergerät nicht ordnungsgemäß zurückgesetzt worden ist, weist Sarp zurück, denn plötzlich kommt ihm eine Idee, wo der Fehler liegen könnte.
• Die Bemerkung mit der offensichtlich falschen Anzeige der Kühlmitteltemperatur hat den entscheidenden Hinweis auf einen möglicherweise defekten Sensor geliefert.
• Sarp bittet die Kundin erneut in die Werkstatt, tauscht den Kühlmitteltemperatursensor aus, und tatsächlich: Das Problem ist behoben und tritt auch in den folgenden Tagen und Wochen nicht mehr auf. Diagnosekrimi gelöst.

Yücel Sarp freely admits that he made a mistake in this case. He complied too quickly with the customer's request to replace the injection pump and mistrusted his intuition. Conclusion: The repair, including spare parts costs and 2.5 hours of assembly work, cost around 1,400 euros and still did not produce the desired result. Eliminating the actual cause of the error was comparatively much cheaper, costing 9.50 euros for the coolant temperature sensor and taking 3 minutes to install. Although the customer takes the brunt of the blame because she vehemently demanded that the injection pump be replaced, Sarp feels at least partly to blame. As an experienced diagnostician, he should have trusted his intuition more and thought longer about what could be causing the engine to jerk and smoke when starting cold. According to Sarp, he has learned from this in the future that he will examine the circumstances and the history of a defect even more closely than before.
