"While relief has recently been sought in other areas such as VAT or payroll tax, the tightening of the burden on cars appears to be systematic," says Burkhard Ernst, referring to surveys by the Chamber of Commerce: "In the past 20 years, the tax screw has been turned an incredible 41 times. This does not happen in any other area!" Accordingly, the NoVA law was changed no less than 24 times, 22 times at the initiative of politicians and twice by the Constitutional Court due to wording deficiencies. The Motor Vehicle Tax Act made 12 changes in these 20 years and the relevant passages of the Insurance Tax Act were also adapted 5 times.
“It is high time to finally bring about a turnaround here and provide relief,” said Ernst. Finally, with the high fuel prices including the hefty mineral oil tax and the increases in parking fees now announced for Vienna, drivers would face additional burdens. “It is important that, in light of war, pandemic and enormous inflation, ways are taken to relieve the burden on the population,” said club chairman Ernst, “but this relief must not stop at drivers.”
