The first charging stations are currently located at Billa branches in Maria Lanzendorf, Gmünd, Raasdorf, Eichgraben, Jennersdorf, Wr. Neustadt, Gratkorn, Knittelfeld, Pernitz, Prinzersdorf, Schwanenstadt and Pöggstall. “We want to offer our customers the opportunity to charge electricity wherever they need it, making it easier to switch to a battery-electric vehicle,” says Saghi Naglis, Mobility Manager at Shell in Austria. The new fast charging stations are compatible with most electric vehicles and offer powerful charging capacity, allowing the vehicles to be significantly charged in the time of an average purchase. Billa board member Robert Nagele: “We will continue to push the expansion of fast charging stations in the Billa branch network with Shell and will equip another 100 Billa, Bipa and Penny locations with them within the next two years.”

Shell aims to become a net-zero emissions company by 2050. In 2017, the company bought NewMotion, Europe's largest charging provider at the time, which has since been renamed Shell Recharge Solutions. In 2019, Shell began equipping its gas stations with Recharge fast charging stations. In 2021, Shell acquired the Berlin startup ubitricity, which enables charging from lanterns. And recently, Shell acquired SBRS GmbH, a leading provider of charging infrastructure solutions for commercial electric vehicles. At a global level, Shell and BYD signed a strategic cooperation agreement last year to improve the charging experience for BYD customers. There is also a cooperation agreement with Ionity, the joint venture between Audi, BMW, Daimler, Ford, Hyundai, Porsche and Volkswagen, to build fast charging stations along motorways in Europe. In Austria, Shell plans to build a comprehensive charging network on motorways by 2025.
