Marcus 2023: The winners

46 car models that came onto the domestic market in 2022 were tested and evaluated by ÖAMTC experts. The aim of Marcus is to highlight the characteristics that are most important to car buyers. "Those interested are faced with an ever-increasing variety of drive and equipment concepts. Especially in economically challenging times, Marcus offers good orientation with a transparent and objective evaluation," emphasizes ÖAMTC director Oliver Schmerold. The 46 car models were evaluated according to the criteria of climate friendliness, safety and economy, from which the overall winners were calculated in the four vehicle categories: small car & compact class, mid-size car, SUV & crossover and luxury class. A second Marcus in each vehicle category was awarded by the ÖAMTC members: They were able to choose their favorite in each vehicle class from all the new releases in 2022. In addition, Robert Bosch GmbH was awarded the signpost by a jury of experts for its overall entrepreneurial performance in relation to future-oriented technologies in the automotive sector.

The winner's trophy in the small car & compact class category was won by the MG4 Electric, and MG also took first place in the mid-size car category with its MG5 Electric. The Kia Niro won in the SUV & Crossover category and the Škoda Enyaq Coupé iV won in the luxury class category. The overall rating is made up of a safety, economic efficiency and climate rating. When it comes to safety features, the standard equipment was evaluated based on 38 defined features (basic variants of each model). The basis for the assessment of climate friendliness and cost-effectiveness were consumption measurement drives by the editorial team of the ÖAMTC mobility magazine auto touring. Of the 46 cars that came onto the market in Austria in 2022, 43 could be tested, three models were not made available. To calculate the cost-effectiveness, additional factors such as list price, mileage and loss of value were taken into account.

In terms of climate friendliness, the innovations with the lowest CO2 emissions were awarded; for electric cars, a CO2 equivalent calculated from electricity consumption was used. The expert jury, chaired by ÖAMTC chief technician Thomas Hametner, consisted of Walter Böhme (ÖVK), Herbert Demel, Bernhard Geringer (Vienna University of Technology), Reinhard Kolke (ADAC e.V.), Cornelia Lex (Graz University of Technology), and Peter Schoeggl (AVL List GmbH).
