A recent study shows that 92 percent of Austrians view vintage cars as cultural assets that should be preserved.

The classic car scene is flourishing

The study was carried out on behalf of Christian Schamburek, editor and author of the Oldtimer Guide and Secretary General of the Austrian Historical Mobility Board of Trustees. Current reason: Environmental issues, questions regarding future mobility, government constellations, the pandemic, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, inflation and the rise in energy prices have left a clear mark on society. The question was what impact these developments have on the historic vehicle market segment.

Conclusion of the study: Mr. and Mrs. Austrians love classic automobiles and two-wheelers. 90 percent are happy when they see a classic car on the street. 92 percent see classic cars as cultural assets that should be preserved and almost 100,000 Austrians own a historic car or motorcycle. This results in a proud sum of around 5.6 billion euros in existing assets, which are happily looked after and cared for in private hands in Austria in order to be able to demonstrate the history of mobility to future generations. Because vintage cars are contemporary witnesses to the history of mobility and as such should continue to be on Austria's roads in the future. The inventory of historic automobiles in relation to the total inventory is 2.9 percent. The mileage of all vintage automobiles per year is around 0.3 percent in relation to the total mileage of all cars in Austria. Historic vehicles are used rarely, carefully and carefully. The low mileage also shows that classic cars are not relevant to the issue of the environment.

The total sales of the classic car industry in Austria add up to around 756 million euros per year. This number is made up of the direct and indirect expenses of the owners and the relevant domestic purchases and sales. Crafts, small and medium-sized businesses and tourism regions in particular benefit from the expenditure incurred during events and trade fairs.
