Car referendum at the finish line

"The taxes on your own car are far too high in Austria. In fact, the car has now become a luxury item." Says Gerhard Lustig, initiator of the “Costs Down” referendum. A survey by the European Association of Automobile Manufacturers places Austria at the top of the EU in a cost comparison: an average of 2,678 euros in taxes and duties are due per vehicle per year in this country, which is second place behind Belgium with 3,187 euros. Neighbor Germany, for example, collects 1,963 euros per vehicle, while Spain, at the bottom, is content with 1,068 euros. Now the car referendum wants to remedy the situation. The official registration week runs until April 7th. “So far, 47,000 signatures have been collected as declarations of support,” says Gerhard Lustig happily. “Now we have to overcome the hurdle of 100,000 in the final and ensure that the issue comes to parliament.”

Solutions required

The three central demands of the car referendum in detail:

1. Die Senkung der Steuern und Abgaben aufs Auto um 25 Prozent. Das würde nach heutigem Stand durchschnittlich 670 Euro Einsparung bedeuten und Österreich auf das Niveau von Deutschland bringen.
2. Die Einführung eines Reparaturbonus für Autos, ähnlich jenem für Elektrogeräte. Hier könnten auch gezielt Arbeiten zur Senkung von Verbrauch und Ausstoß gefördert werden – in jeder Hinsicht eine nachhaltige Maßnahme also.
3. Die Erarbeitung eines Masterplans zur Parkraumbewirtschaftung. Derzeit arbeiten Gemeinden, oft sogar Bezirke, gegeneinander und lassen nichts unversucht, Parkraum zu vernichten und die Nutzung des Autos zu erschweren. Es braucht aber auch hier eine Lösung mit Vernunft und im Miteinander.
