Deutsche EnBW joins Smatrics
EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG is taking over 25.1 percent of the shares in the Verbund subsidiary Smatrics through its subsidiary EnBW mobility+ AG & Co.KG. Confidentiality was agreed on the details of the transaction. The deal is still subject to approval by the responsible antitrust authorities. Smatrics and EnBW had already founded the joint subsidiary Smatrics EnBW in 2020. With around 250 DC fast charging points, the joint venture operates the largest fast charging network in Austria - and is continuing to drive the expansion of electromobility.
“If the largest Austrian green electricity provider and the operator of the largest public fast-charging network in Germany now work even more closely together, then it will be an emission-free turbo boost for the mobility of the future,” says Verbund CEO Michael Strugl. Verbund generates around 97 percent of its electricity from renewable energies, primarily hydropower, and is one of the largest electricity producers in Europe in this area. Strugl emphasizes: “The decisive factors for the successful introduction of e-mobility are the general conditions and infrastructure as well as the provision of electricity from 100% renewable energy.”
“Promoting e-mobility”
EnBW's investment in Smatrics lays the foundation for even closer cooperation between the two companies. Timo Sillober, Chief Sales & Operations Officer at EnBW, explains: "Following our successful joint venture for the expansion of charging infrastructure in Austria, this investment is exactly the right step. It enables us to achieve even better integration for far-reaching product collaborations. The competencies of our companies complement each other ideally, especially when it comes to the fleet and business customer areas. This allows us to further advance the success of electromobility."
EnBW and Smatrics have already developed a municipal utility offer together this year and launched a complete charging solution for fleet operators. Smatrics managing director Hauke Hinrichs sees EnBW's entry as a strategic partner also strengthening the content orientation of Smatrics as an IT and tech company in the field of e-mobility: "EnBW focuses on the end customer and we are the technological solution provider in the background." In the future, Hinrichs would like to position Smatrics more strongly as a technological e-mobility partner for energy suppliers, municipal utilities or companies in the energy industry.
