Rotax relies on electric drives

"When it comes to drive technologies, the focus is on customer benefit when it comes to powersports vehicles. Thanks to the great acceleration values on motorcycles, electric drives are an attractive mobility option in urban areas," said the General Manager of BRP-Rotax, Stefan Arndt, on the occasion of a side event at the 46th International Vienna Motor Symposium in Vienna, pointing out that electric drives have also caused great enthusiasm in karting. Likewise, electric and hybrid drives for utility applications in all-terrain vehicles (ATV) for fire departments, municipalities or agriculture are becoming increasingly important, and not just for ecological reasons: “High torque and therefore very respectable acceleration values, for example, ensure very positive media response in Europe and North America on the electrically powered motorcycles of our Can-Am group brand,” stated Arndt.

Challenging missions

Where purely electric drives reach their limits - for example with long distances, high continuous power, impassable terrain or limited charging infrastructure - tailor-made solutions are required. Here, hybrid concepts can meet the demanding requirements of powersports applications. In particular, range extenders for utility vehicles or boats allow the combination of emission-free and quiet everyday vehicle operation with a long range for more demanding applications. “For us, technological openness is the key to future-proof drive solutions,” says Stefan Arndt. As a traditional manufacturer of four-stroke, two-stroke and electric drives for power sports vehicles, BRP-Rotax is actively driving the transformation towards sustainable mobility with its development centers in Gunskirchen, Kottingbrunn and Taipei. In addition to innovative propulsion systems for BRP brands such as Ski-Doo, Lynx, Sea-Doo and Can-Am as well as sports aircraft and karts, the company also develops tailor-made solutions for OEMs and external partners, from the concept phase to series integration, industrialization and production.
