At the annual press conference of Porsche Holding Salzburg (PHS), it became clear how badly the automotive industry was hit by the pandemic.

“We assume that the Austrian Passenger car market 2020 with around 245,000 new registrations will come to rest. This is the lowest market figure since 1987," said Hans Peter Schützinger, spokesman for the Porsche Holding management, and added: "We expect that in this difficult year we will achieve just over 90,000 registrations with the Volkswagen Group brands in Austria and will finish with the highest market share in our history (36.7 percent). Given the difficult conditions, we are satisfied with this result."
While new car markets worldwide fell by 16 percent this year, theThe decline in Europe was significantly greater at 24.2 percent. The situation in Austria is similar, where the car market collapsed by 25.6 percent, extrapolated to the calendar year.

Drive development
In 2020 there was a clear shift within drives towards alternative forms of drive. While the share of diesel in the overall market fell by 1.2 percentage points to 37 percent and the share of gasoline-powered vehicles fell by 9.8 percentage points to 44.2 percent, the share of alternative drives more than doubled to 18.8 percent (+11.1 percentage points). This means that new registrations of alternative drives rose by around 18,500 units in the same period last year.
This results in the following distribution:
- Reine Elektrofahrzeuge: 12.581 Stück, mit 5,6 Prozent hat sich der Marktanteil damit verdoppelt.
- Modelle mit Hybrid-Antrieb erzielten 13 Prozent Marktanteil (+8,2 Prozentpunkte), wobei das statistische Zentralamt jedoch nicht zwischen Mildhybrid und Plug-In-Hybrid unterscheidet.
- Erdgas CNG-Modelle erzielten mit 0,2 Prozent einen Marktanteil analog zum Vorjahr.
Outlook for 2021
Porsche Holding Salzburg expects in the first months of the year2021for the majority of the countries in which it trades, only onevery slow recoverythe current market environment. In Austria, due to the changes to NoVA announced for July 1, 2021,First half of the year, early purchases of carsandlight commercial vehicles(up to 3.5 t) with combustion engines can be expected - and these in all vehicle classes. The PHS expects forAn overall passenger car market in 2021of no more than290,000 new cars. This will be well below the average of the past five years, which was almost 308,500 vehicles.
The E-mobility will be another due to the rapidly growing range of models and the current funding in Austriaexperienced significant market growth. The PHS alone expects its e-car sales to triple in 2021. The attractiveness of the product range will also be high in 2021 thanks to numerous new models from the Volkswagen Group brands.
