Mobile.de study: The car remains important

More than every second driver in Germany (63.5 percent) currently drives a gasoline-powered car. One in five (21.8 percent) travels with a diesel. Only three percent of the drivers surveyed currently drive an electric car (fully electric), most often in the 25-44 age group. When asked which form of drive they found most forward-looking, more than one in three drivers (37.4 percent) were in favor of a hydrogen-powered drive. However, 17.8 percent prefer a fully electric drive and 10.8 percent prefer plug-in hybrids. Petrol (9.3 percent) and diesel (3.7 percent) fall slightly behind here, but almost half of combustion engine drivers (43.8 percent) say they still want to use a gasoline or diesel vehicle in five years.

One in three (27.9 percent) can at least imagine choosing a different type of drive in the future. 13.5 percent would like to switch to an alternative drive by 2027 at the latest. Only 4.7 percent said they would no longer drive a car in five years.

The possibility of leaving the vehicle at home more often in the next five years and increasingly switching to other means of transport is out of the question for 60.1 percent of German drivers: on the one hand because they are dependent on their car (36 percent) and on the other hand because they do not want to do without it (24.1 percent). At least one in five people (21.7 percent) would like to diversify in the future and use other means of transport in addition to the car. Among the alternative means of transport, 29.9 percent would choose buses and trains, 25.2 percent would choose bicycles, and 10.4 percent would increasingly walk.

Another finding of the study: Not only the vehicle models have multiplied, but also the forms of purchase and use. Here, buying a car (34.5 percent) remains the most popular. This is followed by car leasing (14.2 percent), car subscription (12.0 percent) and car financing (9.5 percent).

Germans still see room for improvement when it comes to autonomous driving: 82.1 percent have never driven a fully or partially autonomous vehicle. However, 33.2 percent of those surveyed would like to try it out – while 48.9 percent would prefer not to. The skepticism is primarily due to the lack of trust in the technology: more than one in four (57.1 percent) still have mistrust. Only strict tests (58.5 percent) and the option of switching to manual operation (52.7 percent) could change the minds of the skeptics.
