Performance boost for e-mobility
The chemical company Evonik is investing in the battery specialist SuperC, which is a leader in graphene materials.

Performance boost for e-mobility
Graphene materials can improve the range, robustness, charging speed and lifespan of lithium-ion batteries, thereby increasing the performance of electric vehicles. "By investing in SuperC, we are supporting a promising cutting-edge technology. High-performance batteries are a decisive factor in accelerating the electrification of road transport and permanently reducing CO2 emissions," says Bernhard Mohr, head of Evonik's venture capital unit. SuperC has developed an innovative process to produce graphene with few layers and thus pastes for electrodes in lithium-ion batteries. The addition of graphene increases the electrical and thermal conductivity of the batteries, improving their overall performance and disposition speed. The batteries are also less sensitive to temperature. This reduces the need for cooling and reduces the risk of fire. "With our technology, we want to pave the way for the next generation of batteries. We are pleased to have a strong and international partner at our side in Evonik," says Di Sun, Managing Director of SuperC.
As one of the world's leading specialty chemicals companies, Evonik is committed to innovative and sustainable solutions for e-mobility. One focus is on improving battery technology: the group's products are used in numerous battery components and make them more powerful, safer and more environmentally friendly. Evonik also has its own global research center for lithium-ion batteries in Shanghai. "The Chinese battery industry has experienced rapid growth in recent years. With the investment, we are creating synergies in innovations for battery materials and thus supporting our local business development," says Fuliang Xia, President of Evonik Greater China. Experts expect global demand for lithium-ion batteries to increase fivefold by 2030.
