The future is electric and autonomous

Robert Steinböck, Leitung Produkt & Innovation

The e-mobility platform “has to be” asked Robert Steinböck to talk about electric mobility. With a few interesting approaches to various points:

  • Welche Herausforderungen bringt die aktuelle Mobilitätswende mit sich?

Robert Steiböck:"The mobility transition brings with it the challenge of building new plants or production lines for electric vehicles, especially for manufacturers. This means that the focus is now clearly on building the infrastructure to produce vehicles. The key to the future success of the automotive industry lies in the battery systems - and despite current frequent changes to the EU regulations on the end of combustion engines, we can assume that at least 30 percent of all newly produced vehicles can be electric vehicles by 2030. The Volkswagen Group With around 52 billion euros invested in e-mobility, is certainly one of the manufacturers with the greatest “commitment” to climate neutrality. It is important to bring cell production to Europe. Volkswagen AG will set up its own plants for this purpose. We have set ourselves major goals for climate neutrality within the group by 2050.”

  • Funktioniert die E-Mobilität schon für die breite Masse?

"Anyone who has driven an electric car for more than a week will realize that e-mobility can already meet all of a driver's needs today. The demand for electric cars is very high, the skeptics are drastically decreasing. One thing is certain: in order to win new customers, you can only continue to rely on "conviction" - and driving with combustion engines in the future will be financially painful. However, with the increasing number of electric vehicles, the expansion of public charging stations must also be promoted. Over the last three years I have been able to experience first hand the development of occupancy at the charging stations. Last summer you had to be very lucky to find a free fast charging station right away.”

  • Wer ist verantwortlich für den Ladeinfrastrukturaufbau?

"If we want to get global warming under control, the sources of our energy must change radically. Energy that emits greenhouse gases such as CO2 must be replaced by clean electricity in the next few years. We must increase the share of clean electricity worldwide from around 20 percent today to 50 percent in 2050. Together with the implementation of energy-saving measures and the modernization of our energy systems. Mobility, as the cause of almost a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions, plays a crucial role in the transformation. Who “Who is responsible for setting up the charging infrastructure is a good question! It’s a bit like the chicken and the egg.”

  • Was sind die Herausforderungen beim Aufbau der Ladeinfrastruktur bei Händlern?

"The majority of the companies are located on the outskirts of the city. The existing electrical network connection is largely not sufficient to set up additional public charging stations. Intelligent ecosystems such as PV and battery storage, if possible from used vehicle batteries in conjunction with innovative load management, are an economical solution here. Public charging points, in turn, need innovative and intelligent payment systems that, in the best case, can also be connected to electrical load management."

  • Wie schaut die Mobilität der Zukunft für Sie aus?

“It is definitely electric and in the future it will also be autonomous – and that will seriously change the whole of mobility.”
