BMW stands by Austria
In view of the current bad news from the Austrian supplier industry, the positive developments should not be overlooked. Good news can be heard from Steyr, for example. So when you buy a BMW or MINI you choose a product with added value from Austria. Of all the model additions this year, around half of the engines were produced at the BMW Group plant in Steyr in Upper Austria. In six of the 23 model additions, the engines come 100 percent from Austria. The Steyr plant also impresses as a competence center for the BMW Group in the area of development: development work from Upper Austria will be used in more than half of the new launches in 2024.
The BMW models with engines manufactured entirely in Austria include the BMW 4 Series including the BMW M4, the BMW M3, BMW M4 CS and the BMW M2 Coupe as well as the BMW 2 Series Coupe. At the BMW development center, 700 employees are researching the drives of the future. One research focus is heat management, i.e. the highly complex interaction between electric motor, power electronics and battery to optimize drive power and consumption while at the same time maximizing driving comfort. Heat management for all BMW Group electric vehicles is developed exclusively in Steyr. The Steyr development team is also responsible for the driving behavior application – i.e. how the vehicle drives and how it responds.
The BMW Group invested 361 million euros in the Austrian economy last year alone. With over 5,700 employees, the BMW Group secures jobs in Austria every day and ensures stable employment. Together with the Austrian dealer partners, the BMW Group has a total of 8,000 employees in Austria.
