Team Austria shines at the professional world championships

Red-white-red flags, thunderous applause and standing ovations greeted the 47 WorldSkills participants in the Austrian Chamber of Commerce. They welcomed more than 250 visitors, including high-ranking decision-makers from politics and business, friends, families, employers and sponsors. Three gold, one silver and three bronze medals as well as 22 Medallions for Excellence (performance diplomas) brought Red-White-Red to sixth place internationally in Lyon, France, in mid-September. In the European rankings, only hosts France and Switzerland were ahead of Austria. Our world champions are florist Manuel Bender from Upper Austria, tiler Florian Gruber from Styria and the Lower Austrian concrete construction duo Christoph Kurz and Stefan Huber. Painter Lena Prinz from Lower Austria won silver. Magdalena Rath from Styria, hotel receptionist Lisa-Marie Spörk from Vienna and chemical laboratory technician Stefan Moser from Tyrol won bronze. 22 Medallions for Excellence – performance diplomas for top results just behind the medal ranks – rounded off Austria’s excellent result.

Host and WKÖ Vice President Carmen Goby applauded the “Young Competitors” in her opening speech: “Our young specialists have measured themselves against the world’s best talents and have made a strong statement about the quality and innovative strength of Austrian vocational training.” SkillsAustria President Josef Herk explained: “Success means more than medals: Our team shows how expertise builds bridges between cultures and has the power to strengthen a community that unites peoples.” Jürgen Kraft, Managing Director of SkillsAustria, said: “In order to remain at eye level with emerging economic areas, we must consistently develop our training system and continue to invest specifically in the promotion of skilled workers.” The next skills highlights in 2025: The EuroSkills European Skills Championships will take place in Herning, Denmark, from September 9th to 13th. The AustrianSkills will take place in Salzburg from November 20th to 23rd, 2025.
