Styrian woman wins at Austrian Skills
The multi-part state championships for the 2023 professions ended with a brilliant showdown in the Mozart city of Salzburg. After three intensive days of competition in which the young participants filed, sewed or hammered, the best young skilled workers in Austria in 29 professions were chosen at today's finale. In total - competitions have already taken place in Wels, Altmünster and Wels - state champions were determined in 50 professions. This shows that young female specialists in particular are successful in long-standing male-dominated areas.
“Our ‘Young Professionals’ delivered impressive performances,” emphasizes SkillsAustria President Josef Herk. For him, the 2023 State Championships were not only a challenging competition, but also an opportunity to draw attention to diversity and talent in Austrian vocational training. Gold medal winner in automotive technology Leonie Tieber from Paldau in Styria works at the ÖAMTC: "I'm very pleased that I was the first woman to win in a profession where men have set the tone for decades. Because I think it's an important sign that we girls can be just as good automotive technicians as men," she said after the award ceremony. Gender doesn't play a role when analyzing errors or repairing a car. "I started tinkering with cars when I was a child - back then with our neighbors. Now I'm happy that I can earn money with this passion - and am now a state champion." For the victorious participants, the skills journey doesn't end any longer: the best placed will represent Austria at the WorldSkills 2024 professional championships in Lyon (from September 10th to 15th) and at EuroSkills 2025 in Herning, Denmark.
