Future Workshop 4.0: Ambitious project near Stuttgart
The Geislingen Institute for the Automotive Industry has implemented an ambitious project with its “Future Workshop 4.0”: The experts around Prof. Stefan Reindl have built a model factory in Esslingen near Stuttgart in which all processes that occur in the automotive aftermarket can be represented.

Future Workshop 4.0: Ambitious project near Stuttgart
The Future Workshop 4.0, the innovation showcase, training center and test laboratory for the technologies, processes and business models of tomorrow and the day after, was launched today. In Esslingen near Stuttgart, the automotive trade and service are for the first time closely linked to science in order to jointly solve future challenges. These consist, for example, in an accelerated wave of digitalization and the increasingly rapid change in automotive technology. In the workshop of the future, scanners for detecting damage to automobiles can be experienced, as can the use of artificial intelligence along the customer journey in the car dealership and workshop.
"At first, the future workshop was just a vision. But then the opportunity for realization arose through funding as part of the Baden-Württemberg Automotive Industry Strategy Dialogue. Under the leadership of professors Dr. Stefan Reindl and Dr. Benedikt Maier from the Institute for Automotive Economics (IfA) at the University of Economics and Environment (HfWU), concrete plans emerged from the initial concept," explains Siegfried Trede, Head of the DAT Academy. DAT is a shareholder and strategic partner of the future workshop.
The operating company was founded in July 2020 and is supported by the HfWU, the DAT and the IfA. A former bus depot in Esslingen proved to be the ideal location for the future workshop. As part of the renovation, two full-fledged workshop workstations, an exhibition area and seminar rooms were built on an area of 450 square meters.
Digitalization of processes
Helmut Eifert, DAT Managing Director: "As is well known, the digitalization of business processes in automotive companies is the subject of numerous lectures and consulting offers. With Future Workshop 4.0, we want to demonstrate the practical suitability of using appropriate software systems and components."
Thilo Wagner, DAT Managing Director, adds: “As DAT, we will not only contribute our expertise in the areas of software and processes, but as a neutral data authority for the automotive industry, we will also take on the role of a multiplier and link within the industry.”
Jens Nietzschmann, DAT managing director, sums up: "The Future Workshop 4.0 stands for successful networking in the automotive industry and therefore corresponds 100 percent with DAT's core brand values. With our DAT Academy, we will provide another building block in connecting technology and system providers or even start-ups with the industry."
So that the future workshop can always present and use the latest trends and products, contacts with workshop suppliers, suppliers, service providers and other industry partners were sought. To date, 95 corporate collaborations have been concluded.
