Vienna is different: assistance with calibration
With driver assistance systems, the demands on workshops in terms of calibration are increasing. The Vienna State Guild has now found an innovative solution: two model companies in the field of measurement and calibration are making their infrastructure available to their industry colleagues.

Vienna is different: assistance with calibration
The Vienna State Guild of Automotive Technology, professional group of body construction technicians, body painters and wheelwrights, presents an unconventional solution for measurement and calibration after repairs: specialist companies with the latest equipment offer colleagues in the industry quick appointments for the proper completion of the necessary work.
Driver assistance systems are not a passing trend; some are already mandatory in new cars and there are more and more of them. In Europe, the following systems must be standard equipment for newly typed cars from 2022 and for all new cars from 2024: the automatic emergency braking assistant, the lane keeping assistant, the intelligent speed assistant, the drowsiness assistant and the emergency brake warning.
Challenge for independent workshops
The sensors of the driver assistance systems are installed in the fairing and in parts of the vehicle that are often affected in a collision. These can be bumpers, windshields, tires or side mirrors. If these parts are affected, the vehicle must be measured and properly calibrated after the repair or part replacement. This is where the challenge begins for many workshops, as calibration has to be carried out according to strict requirements so that the system reacts early and correctly in the event of danger.
"The demands on the workshop for proper calibration are enormous. Many independent workshops cannot create appropriate workplaces for measurement and calibration simply due to a lack of space. Sooner or later it will be necessary for everyone to have a solution for this," says Günter Blümel, deputy state guild master and chairman of the professional group of body construction technicians, body painters and wheelwrights in Vienna.
One of the solutions is to calibrate the repaired vehicle at the manufacturer or importer company, but here you have to accept longer waiting times for appointments and the brand dependency.
Blümel and Federal Guild Master Deputy Manfred Kubik came up with the idea for a new solution. The Vienna Regional Guild initiated the possibility of measuring and calibrating with colleagues who have the latest technology and experience. “The biggest advantage of this unconventional solution is quick appointments for colleagues,” says Blümel. “The following situation is commonplace in most companies: The customer doesn’t want to wait long and the appointment for the calibration has to be available quickly.”
Günter Blümel and Manfred Kubik developed the idea for colleagues in the entire automotive technology industry, both for body construction technicians and body painters as well as for vehicle technicians. The cooperation partners can agree on the prices for the technical service in a personal conversation.
Two companies for now
In Vienna, two companies are currently available for collaboration: Autopark Wien – Alex Guillaume Ellinger GmbH & Co KG in Vienna Donaustadt ( https://www.autopark.wien ) and A. u. H. Lederer Gesellschaft m.b.H. in Vienna Landstrasse ( https://www.autorep-lederer.at ). Both have professionally equipped workstations for measurement and calibration as well as specially trained employees. The required work is carried out and documented in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications.
In this way, the workshop can provide its customers with proof of the calibration carried out in addition to the invoice. “Viennese specialist companies that have the same know-how and the corresponding equipment for calibration and are interested in cooperation can contact the state guild of vehicle technology,” says Blümel. The idea developed in Vienna is intended to serve all representatives of the Austrian automotive industry so that the workshops support each other in overcoming technical challenges together.
