Since 2019, the ÖAMTC and its partners have been investigating the environmental friendliness of current vehicles as part of Green NCAP. Greenhouse gases, pollutant emissions and energy consumption of the drive are checked on the chassis dynamometer, but also on the road. Max Lang, vehicle and environmental expert at the mobility club, summarizes the results: “Once again, electric cars have emerged as the most environmentally friendly variant in these test scenarios: Ford Mustang Mach-E, Nissan Leaf e+ and Lexus UX 300e achieve the maximum rating of five stars.” Incidentally, this is not only due to the fact that its purely electric motor does not produce any emissions when driving, but also because of the energy efficiency of such a drive, which is significantly superior to any combustion engine.

Plug-in hybrid is catching up

If you don't want to switch to a fully electric vehicle, a hybrid model is also a good option when it comes to environmental friendliness. "This time we took a close look at the plug-in hybrid variants of Renault Captur and VW Golf in the Green NCAP. With 3.5 stars each, both are not much inferior to a pure electric car," explains the ÖAMTC expert. "The fact that the ratings were not even better for both vehicles is primarily due to the high particle emissions - despite the appropriate filters. And the CO2 emissions were also significantly increased in some of our tests." Nevertheless, hybrids and plug-in hybrids currently represent one of the most environmentally friendly alternatives to electric cars.

Please give Diesel a detention

The Audi A3, the only diesel vehicle in the test, couldn't quite keep up. “Three stars are still a respectable result,” explains Lang. “The exhaust aftertreatment of the A3 generally works well, but there is room for improvement – ​​the values ​​could be significantly better, especially with regard to shorter journeys.” Above all, in the opinion of the ÖAMTC expert, the manufacturer should work on greenhouse gas emissions - for example by reducing fuel consumption.
