Fewer used vehicles admitted

According to Statistics Austria, a total of 385,780 used passenger cars were registered on the road from January to June 2020, 11.5 percent fewer than in the first half of the previous year. While used registrations initially increased compared to the same month of the previous year (January +3.7%; February +0.1%), they fell significantly in the months of the COVID-19-related lockdown (March -48.7%; April -39.1%). In May the decline was already less severe (-3.2%), and in June used car registrations rose again (+26.8%).

Declines compared to the first half of 2019 were recorded by both diesel-powered cars (share: 59.4%; -13.3%) and petrol-powered cars (including flex fuel; share: 38.5%; -10.4%). Registrations of used cars with alternative drives reached a share of 2.1 percent of total used car registrations and increased by 40.8 percent.

The number of used registrations fell among all of the top 10 car brands: Opel -17.3%, Ford -13.7%, Peugeot -13.1%, VW -12.0%, Renault -11.0%, Mercedes -9.8%, Audi -9.6%, Seat -9.5%, BMW -8.0% and Skoda -0.5%.
