The VW Group is also struggling with the global semiconductor shortage. "We are experiencing a roller coaster ride on the passenger car market this year. As positive as the first half of the year began with good sales and high order backlogs, the second half of the year is all the more challenging, as the chip shortage and delivery bottlenecks hit us with full force. This means that only a total market of a maximum of 250,000 vehicles is realistic," says Hans Peter Schützinger, spokesman for the management of Porsche Holding Salzburg, adding: "Unfortunately, we have to assume that this extremely volatile situation will last at least until the first half of 2022, to the detriment of retailers, who cannot deliver despite full books, and above all to the suffering of customers, who have to wait a lot longer than usual for their vehicle.
The Volkswagen Group brands were able to maintain their leading market positions in the first nine months. With 72,695 newly registered vehicles, the cumulative market share is 38.3 percent. In the domestic brand ranking, Volkswagen, Škoda and Seat once again occupy the top three places. Among the premium brands, Audi remains in second place, well ahead of other volume brands. When it comes to the most popular models, eight group models are placed in the top ten.
The strong position of the Group brands is also reflected in the electric vehicle segment, which is growing rapidly with 24,134 vehicles (12.7 percent market share): At least one in three newly registered vehicles already bears a logo from the Volkswagen Group. In the brand ranking of electric vehicles, Volkswagen is at the top with 4,759 vehicles, Škoda follows in third place with 1,810 vehicles and Audi in fifth place (1,416 vehicles). The model hit parade also shows the range and strength of the Group brands: the ID.3 is in second place ahead of ID.4 and Enyaq iV; Audi e-tron and Seat Mii take 7th and 8th place.
