The award ceremony for the 38th Great Austrian Automobile Prize of the ARBÖ club journal “Freie Reise” took place again this year without a gala evening. The “Start” category contains many small and compact vehicles, which makes this category particularly interesting for many people. This year, first place went to the Škoda Fabia, followed by the Toyota Yaris Cross and the Hyundai Bayon in second and third place.
The middle category “Medium” was spoiled for choice: the 100-member jury was able to choose from 20 vehicles that catered to a wide range of models (electric cars, sedans, SUVs) and many tastes – no easy task. The electric Audi Q4 e-tron ultimately won the race. Another electric car, namely the Ford Mustang Mach-E, came in second place and the Mercedes C-Class was just enough for the podium.
After 2019 and 2020, an electric car was once again chosen as the winner in the third category “Premium”. The Audi e-tron GT was able to outpace its ten competitors and secured gold. Silver and bronze each went to Mercedes: The Mercedes S-Class came in second place, the Mercedes EQS took third place in the extra-class car category.
"Especially in times of the pandemic, owning a car has become more important. During the award ceremony, it became clear what an impressive range of models and drive systems is currently on offer. We as ARBÖ are very proud to have been able to award this traditional automobile award for 38 years," said Gerald Kumnig happily on the occasion of the trophy presentation in Salzburg. For ARBÖ President Peter Rezar, the importance of the prize is once again shown: "The Great Austrian Automobile Prize has reflected people's purchasing behavior and the Austrian car market for 38 years. The trend towards electrification is progressing, half of the vehicles available on the market are available with an electric drive or an alternative drive - this development can also be clearly seen in the award-winning models."
