VW is catching up with Tesla
In 2020, Volkswagen registered 176% more new registrations of pure electric vehicles in Germany than Tesla. Market researchers predict that total sales will reach parity by 2025.

VW is catching up with Tesla

Last year, 46,211 pure electric cars from Volkswagen were newly registered in Germany, while there were only 16,698 Teslas. When it comes to new registrations of pure electric vehicles in Germany, VW is clearly in first place, followed by Renault and then Tesla. When comparing all drive types, it becomes clear that Tesla is nowhere near the size of Volkswagen. VW put 5.32 million cars on the roads worldwide last year, Tesla only around 500,000. Nevertheless, Tesla is now worth 600.47 billion euros on the stock market, whereas Volkswagen only has 83.9 billion euros. Tesla is currently number one in the world when it comes to sales of pure electric vehicles. Market researchers from the German news platform Block-Builders assume that the global market share of German car manufacturers in the electric market will increase from the current 18 to 29 percent by 2024. As the infographic shows, VW could sell as many electric vehicles as Tesla as early as 2025. “Last year, Tesla shares gained around 605 percent in value,” said Block Builders analyst Raphael Lulay. "At Volkswagen, however, the increase is only just under 11 percent. In view of the development described, the extent of Tesla's valuation in particular is quite questionable."
