On the occasion of the presentation of the 2020 annual report, the Volkswagen Group explains its new platform model strategy. The transformation should now proceed quickly.

Volkswagen relies on the platform model

"Electrification and digitalization are changing the car faster and more radically than ever before. Economies of scale are absolutely crucial for both topics. With our platform roadmap, we will exploit the full potential of our group group even better. We are combining the strengths of our strong brands and can thus scale future technologies even faster and make them available to as many people as possible," says Herbert Diess, Austrian-born and CEO of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft.

The platform roadmap consists of four core themes:Hardware, software, battery & chargingas well as Mobility services.

Hardware

With the modularElectric drive modular system (MEB)Volkswagen already has a purely electric platform. This will be scaled worldwide with production in Europe, China and the USA.Until 2022should be group-wide27 models based on the MEBbe offered. As early as next year, the group plans to launch its first vehicles based on thePremium Platform Electric (PPE)with more acceleration, longer ranges and shorter charging times. By the middle of the decade, the group wants to develop the next generation of a purely electric, fully digital and highly scalable vehicle platform with the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP).on which models of all brands and segments can then be built.

software

When it comes to connectivity and software in vehicles, Volkswagen is aiming for synergy effects across all brands in the coming years. The Car.Software Org, founded in 2020, provides the basis for this. with the VW.OS operating system. Version 1.2 follows with the PPE. With the SSP, version 2.0 will then be rolled out across the group. Until then the share shouldSelf-developed software in the vehicle will increase from today's 10 percent to 60 percent. The Car.Software Org. also develops the technical basis for autonomous driving as well as for data-based business models and new mobility services.

Battery & Charging

Volkswagen is also pursuing a platform strategy for battery and charging. This is how the group starts introduce a unit cell from 2023 and would like to scale it worldwide. By 2030, the standard cell is expected to be installed in around 80 percent of all of the group's electric vehicles across all brands. In order to meet the need for battery cells, Volkswagen and its partners plan to build six cell factories in Europe with a total capacity of 240 gigawatt hours by the end of the decade. The group is also continuing to expand the public fast-charging network in Europe, China and the USA.

Mobility services

The fourth element of the new platform roadmap consists of mobility and other services. These include, among others, the ridepooling service MOIA, the car sharing offer WeShare and flexible subscription offers from Volkswagen Bank.

Herbert Diess: "Volkswagen will also be the platform champion in the new world of mobility. Our roadmap defines a clear timetable for this. This is how we accelerate oursTransformation into a software-driven mobility group. We are taking this path with the new board of directors with strength and on a solid financial basis. The good performance in the crisis year of 2020 gives us additional tailwind.”
